Begun in the 2005-2006 school year, students who are blind and attend high schools in Baltimore City or Baltimore County were able to participate in The National Federation of the Blind’s (NFB) High School/High Tech "Transition to Independence Club." Since that time, the program has been expanded to incorporate students from other school districts within the Baltimore area.
Club activities increase employment readiness, independence skills and self-confidence with an emphasis on careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) industries.
NFB’s Jernigan Institute, established in 2004 to "develop innovative education, technologies, products and services that help the world’s blind to achieve independence," leads the project.
The program focuses on mentoring, drawing upon their newly established National Center for Mentoring Excellence Program. The NFB’s large community of volunteers will provide mentors and leaders for project activities.
