Through a coordinated effort of Lower Shore Enterprises, the Salisbury Division of Rehabilitation Services’ Office, Holly Community, and Wicomico County Public Schools, 27 high school students took part in National Disability Mentoring Day on October 19, 2005. Among them were students from the Maryland High School/High Tech Program at Lower Shore Enterprises. Presentations about services and resources available at DORS, the Salisbury One-stop Job Market, and Disability Support Services at Wor-Wic Community College, helped to enlighten students about career planning
Students took tours and participated in job shadowing opportunities at such local businesses as Salisbury University, Salisbury Zoo, Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Filtronic, and WMDT-TV. Our High School/High Tech contingent chose to participate in the tour at WMDT, where students (and their chaperones) learned how a TV news program is put together, how a local TV station is run, and the technology that is used to write, produce, and create the effects used in putting together news stories, weather and traffic reports, and locally produced commercials. One of our High School/High Tech students, who is interested in the field of journalism, was fascinated by the whole process, asked a lot of questions, and is hoping to get involved in an internship at the station!

All of the students met this experience with a great deal of enthusiasm and came away with a much greater appreciation for what type of education, experience, and interest is needed to work in a variety of fields.
